"Without diagnosis there can be no treatment" -- Hippocrates
Dr. Stevens utilizes the BioPAK Measurement System allows objectively evaluate the function of our patient's temporomandibular joints, craniofacial muscles and complete functional tooth-jaw system. This capability has been an invaluable aid to the diagnosis and treatment of crainofacial pain and other temporomandibular disorders.

Our system records information that most clinicians see as important in the assessment of a patient's functional tooth-jaw system health. Joint vibrations, muscle activity, jaw movement and interjaw relation can all affect the status of a craniofacial pain/TMD patient.

We Now perform objective treatment outcome measurements on all of our TMD patients. Accurate objective testing helps to determine which treatments are helping the patient's joints and muscles the way we intend them to. We can test the patient's muscles to see if a new mandibular position helps to relax and balance their masticatory muscles, also you can objectively document the improvement (or lack there of) of your patients (even into a courtroom if necessary).

    1. Other Names: Amalgam, Silver filling, Dental Alloy
    2. Composition: ~ 50% Mercury, ~50% Silver and trace amounts of Tin, Zinc, Copper
    3. Problems: Expands greatly with hot foods
      • Causes Cracks in tooth
      • Transfers temperature
      • Leaks moisture and bacterial around the margins
      • Mercury is a known toxin to the human system.
      • Due to its toxic nature, Merury filling material has strict specified methods of disposal required of the dental office.
    1. Appearance: it is unsightly and black looking. It is obvious even on the BACK teeth and darkens the smile

  1. International Academy of Oral Medicine & Toxicology (IAOMT) It is a fallacy that mercury is neutralized when it is combined with other components of silver dental amalgam." Research has shown that mercury even in extremely small amounts has toxic effects, for example, low dose mercury exposure has been shown to produce neurological pathology, cytotoxicity to nerve tissue.
    1. "We find it particularly disturbing that the ADA has made such a blanket statement without any scientific support." IAOMT

3.What other fillings are available?

Resin or Composite Fillings: Composite fillings are a mixture of glass or quartz filler in a resin medium that produces a tooth-colored filling. They are sometimes referred to as composites or filled resins.
Ionomers: Both types experience high wear when placed on chewing surfaces. Both glass and resin ionomers mimic natural tooth color but lack the natural translucency of enamel. Both types are well tolerated by patients with only rare occurrences of allergic response.

  • Glass Ionomer: They are translucent, tooth-colored materials made of a mixture of acrylic acids and fine glass powders that are used to fill cavities, particularly those on the root surfaces of teeth. Glass ionomers can release a small amount of fluoride that may be beneficial for patients who are at high risk for decay
  • Resin ionomers: These also are made from glass filler with acrylic acids and acrylic resin

4. Are there more Materials to repair teeth?  YES, Cast materials (Bold are Metal Free)

    • All-Porcelain (Ceramic) Dental Materials All-porcelain (ceramic) dental materials include porcelain, ceramic or glasslike fillings and crowns. It is the most natural appearing of all CAST materials.
    • Porcelain-fused-to-metal - Another type of restoration is porcelain-fused-to-metal, which provides strength to a crown or bridge. The appearance is tooth like, but inferior to the all porcelain material.
    • Gold alloys contain gold, copper and other metals that result in a strong, effective filling, crown or a bridge. It looks like gold or metal.
    • Indirect Composites: Crowns, inlays and onlays can be made in the laboratory from dental composites.

5. Will my Insurance pay for it? Genreally Yes

This will depend on the policy developed by your employer or the policy your subscriber selected. Insurance coverage varies greatly and determining the coverage is sometimes made obscure by the company as they provide infomaiton about converage in terms of a percent of a dental procedure cost rather than the actual dollar figure. Frequently, obtaining insurance information of the website is unusually difficult.

PORCELAINS AND RESINS

These new materials are far superior to the mercury-silver fillings and other metal restorations most all aspects. Porcelains and resins do not have the toxic nature that silver-mercury fillings do.

YOU HAVE A CHOICE

Metal fillings and crowns have been placed in the mouth for over a hundred years...it was the best alternative at the time. Today IT IS NOT THE BEST ALTERNATIVE. During the past 10 years, new porcelains and resins have revolutionized dentistry. In many cases, we do not need to use metal fillings or crowns.

MERCURY AND ENHANCEMENT DENTISTRY

Why we do not use mercury silver filling in our office.
We know mercury is toxic to the human body, yet, it is an element in amalgam restoration (mercury-silver filling). Many of our patients have experienced dramatic improvements in their health from having all to the mercury containing amalgam restoration replaced with non metal filling material. Although some patients have not experienced noticeable health changes improvements in their health from replacing the amalgam fillings evidence exists to suggest that an overriding benefit is derived from being free of mercury containing fillings in the mouth.

We felt so strongly about not having mercury in your mouth that we have replaced them with only resins and porcelain for the past 20 years. Today's excellent new materials contain no mercury. We believe the new resins and porcelains are safer and they match the color of your teeth! As one of your health care providers, we strive to provide a service that will enhance not just our oral health, but your overall health.

We have no mercury in this office for over 20 years. We must acknowledge one exception and that is a tiny, ancient vial downstairs. We will safely dispose of it. Since it is a hazard to public safety, the state won't allow us to pour it down the drain or throw it into the garbage...however, they will allow us to place it in your mouth!!!for one small bottle in the basement that legally cannot be poured down the drain or thrown into the garbage...it seems the only way we can legally get it out of the office is to put it in someone's mouth!!! Now, should we wonder why several countries no longer allow dentist to use mercury-silver filling material. www.amalgam.org
